How to Create a Host-only LAN Adapter for a VirtualBox Virtual Machine

When running a virtual machine, VM hereafter, it’s quite often to communicate between a Guest and the Host. For example, here we would like to transfer some files from the Host to the IGT-20 Toolchain Guest. There’s also another possibility, such as shared folders, but it’s also a good practice to use SFTP via an host-only virtual network. In VirtualBox, however, it seems not to be enabled by default. Let’s try to go through the process.

First of all, the Guest should be powered off to modify the LAN adapter configuration. Follow the sequential number in the picture below to enable the 2nd LAN adapter and configure it to Host-only Adapter. Then click “OK”.

After the configuration, the 2nd LAN adapter is shown in the VM information as shown in the red rectangular.

After the VM gets into OS, follow the way of the OS to configure the installed 2nd LAN Adapter. In the IGT-20 Toolchain VM, the 2nd LAN is pre-configured using static IP 192.168.56.200. It will be ready to get files from the Host.

Note:
The default of the Host-only Adapter of VirtualBox is DHCP with IP ranging from 192.168.56.101 to 254. If this has been modified, modification is needed to make the pre-configured 2nd LAN of IGT-20 Toolchain work normally.
